Welcome,

Professor Raymond T. Krediet, President (By courtesy of K.D. Nolph)Dear colleagues,

A hearty welcome to the ISPD/EuroPD Congress in Amsterdam. Based on our motto: “From basic and clinical research to optimal care and treatment” the organising committee has made a programme that includes many aspects of peritoneal dialysis, as it stands today.

Nephrologists will find their way in the clinical and basic science sessions, and in those on continuous medical education. A special “Clinical Practice” line is intended for nurses and dietitians. Also a special paediatric programme is present. All lines can easily be recognized in the programme by their special colours.

Accreditation for 21 hours has been given by the Dutch Society of Internal Medicine and the European Accreditation Council of CME. The latter credits are interchangeable with those of the American Medical Association. The American Dietetic Association has accredited the programme. The European Dialysis and Transplant Nurses Association/ European Renal Care Association (EDTNA/ERCA) endorses the paramedical programme.

A number of awards will be given, such as the Maher award for the best investigator below 40 years, the Bergström award for the best ranking abstract, two awards from the Dutch Kidney Foundation for the best posters, and two awards from Fresenius Medical Care The Netherlands, for the best paramedical abstracts. Sponsored by an educational grant from Baxter Healthcare Corporation 20 travel grants have been awarded to support participants from countries with emerging economies.

The following industries will organize a symposium:
Fresenius Medical Care, Gambro Renal products, Genzyme Europe and Baxter Healthcare Corporation. The symposia by Gambro (tickets required) and Baxter will be followed by a social event, those by Fresenius and Genzyme by a lunch. The exhibition hall provides opportunities to visit our sponsors, obtain further information on ISPD membership and future meetings, view the posters and meet your colleagues and friends for informal discussions. I would like to encourage new and present ISPD members to come to the General Assembly, that will be held on Monday August 30 from 8.00-9.00 in the morning.

Amsterdam, the gateway to Europe, is a very pleasant and open city with lots of historical and contemporary landmarks, culture events and restaurants. During the congress a newsletter, sponsored by Gambro The Netherlands will be distributed giving not only interviews with speakers and background information, but also useful suggestions for going out. I hope you will enjoy your stay.
